Angelica Salvatori, aka Sal, is anything but sober. As a hard partying and even harder living criminal, she considers her status as mastermind not just a job, but a calling. Between running her crew, trying to burn down her bar, and dealing with her occasional breaks with reality, she has enough on her plate. When she finds out that she has a twin she didn't know about, one that may be in serious danger because of something she did, Sal reacts by doing what any good delusional sociopath would do. She goes on a violence packed, cross country crime spree to find out who's hunting them and why.

When security consultant Cole Warner is hired by Sal's sister to track her down and keep her safe, he gets a lot more than he bargained for. While pursuing Sal through a series of explosions, gun fights and meetings with drug cartel, he starts to wonder if the woman he's trying to protect needs to be protected from herself. The more he gets to know Sal, the more he thinks that the self declared evil genius may have a death wish. At the same time, he also finds himself having more fun than he's ever had in his life, so she must be doing something right.

Sal and Cole soon find themselves drawn into the illicit underworld of human trafficking as they try to solve the mystery. With the help of Sal's diverse family, a suitcase full of explosives, and a recurring Gary Busey hallucination, the two will embark on a journey to confront a kingpin who may be as dangerous to Sal as she is to herself.

No, literally! That's what makes Sal so brilliant. To call her a kick-ass heroine would be to deny her genius. The plots, the intrigue, the daring, the recklessness - I could go on, and on, and on, and.... Sal is certifiable, she's got to be wanted in several states, she doesn't so much have a crew of gangsters at her beck and call, as much as she has a menagerie of tangled lives that seem content on following her into the gates of hell. Cole, who is so straight, he's become boring, in spite of being a billionaire with an unreasonable Volvo fetish, has just become one more of Sal's minions. Oh, alright, he's more than that but you have to read it to find out just what he is to her. What scares me, is that all of these convoluted, hair-brain, genius plots to take down other criminal masterminds have come to Sal via the warped but brilliant brain of Essa Alroc. I want Essa as my new best friend because I think my life would be safer that way!

Strangely Sober Essa Alroc 9781478341468 Books Reviews

I have to say that Strangely Sober grabbed me more than I expected. It's a crazy, sweet book. I ended up liking many of the characters more than I expected. I think this could be a very fun and successful film. My only gripe is that the characters kept driving from Florida to Arizona in a few hours!

Essa, please keep writing!
I was a bit skeptical when I started this book. However, I soon found that I had a hard time putting it down. It isn't your typical crime/thriller book, which is what I typically read, but there was something that continued to draw me in, making me care about the characters. Just today, as I was finishing the book, it came to me. This book reads a lot like a Carl Hiaasen book fun, lovable characters in a story filled with twists, turns, and humor.
Avid reader, first time reviewer.
It's amazing what an amazing book will make you do. Although I am extremely opinionated, I have never took it upon myself to consider writing about a book before. Even if the book was good.

Well, this author accomplished something amazing with her first full length novel. The author kept my attention enough to finish her book. From constantly reading books I have a tendency to categories books about halfway through a book, predict the ending, and then not finish the book. The flow in which Essa Alroc wrote her book kept me entertained throughout the whole thing.

Unfortunately, I started reading, Strangely Sober, close to my bed time thinking it was going to be a good enough book to put me to sleep (failed to remember the saying,'never base a book by it's cover'). In the beginning of the book it damn-near had me gone, then the author introduced Sal and the book took off from their. Never has 'sarcasm and a gun' been written so well by an author. The author creating a character like Sal was ingenious and made her book funny throughout the whole book. Men will LOVE this book with it's action, women will LOVE this book because the usual take-charge, in your face, genius mastermind is a woman!, and couples will love this book because the author made a fantastic combination with our hero and heroine. They don't overshadow each other, they are both strong, and both are hilariously funny in their own way that makes this book a great read for anyone.

Maybe Spoiler alert.....? Don't read
I somewhat hope their is a sequel and we find out what, "tiny thing", Sal has to do for Carmine before she is totally on the straight arrow.... well straight enough for her ). No field work is a big deal for her.
I LOVED this book and since the synopsis is at the top of the page I won't bore you with repeating the details. Suffice it to say, the characters are well-written and the storyline grabbed me from the very beginning. I only have two small problems with the book (obviously not enough for me to stop reading). It could have used the services of a good editor/proofreader and I could have done without the f-word every other paragraph. I know rough language is to be expected in the genre but do we have to go completely overboard? Otherwise, an amazing story that I really enjoyed.
I loved this book. Essa Alroc created a cast of characters that grabbed me right from the start and made me care what would happen to them. Then she took them on a wild ride that had me mesmerized, unable to put the book down until I was finished. Real, complex and intriguing, the heroines of the story, Sal and Tia proved to be strong though flawed and I found myself cheering for them all the way. The pace was fast, alternating between action, character insights and quirky laugh out loud humor. This book is well worth reading and Essa Alroc is an author to keep watching. I have a feeling we'll all be hearing a lot more about her as time goes by. She's a first rate storyteller.
This book is really good - surprisingly good for a first novel. The characters are very well done and completely engrossing - so just read it already - you won't regret it! I also bailed on it after the first page or two, thinking it was a little more gritty than what I like to read, but it's really not at all - I'm so glad I kept going and now I can't wait to finish it - in the meantime, I'm just enjoying the wild crazy ride. Very talented author - I'm looking forward to reading more from her.
Strangely Sober kept my interest from start to finish. A spectacular romp of zany characters, loosely set
in a bar where no one knows the meaning of moderation - much less sobriety. Reminiscent of Carl Hiaasen, I thoroughly enjoyed the author’s exploration of the psyche of main character, Angelica Salvatori, AKA Sal, whose extended family is lethal but extremely loyal. There is so much fun here I didn’t have difficulty overlooking typos. Alroc maintained a furious momentum filled with love, psychosis, violence, hallucinations, betrayal, lust, reunion, and revenge. Faint of heart, find another book.
