Atlantis will rise again…

Following the discovery of an Ancient outpost buried deep in the Antarctic ice sheet, Stargate Command sends a new team of explorers through the Stargate to the distant Pegasus galaxy.

Emerging in an abandoned Ancient city, the team quickly confirms that they have found the Lost City of Atlantis. But, submerged beneath the sea on an alien planet, the city is in danger of catastrophic flooding unless it is raised to the surface. Things go from bad to worse when the team must confront a new enemy known as the Wraith who are bent on destroying Atlantis.

Stargate Atlantis is the exciting new spin-off of the hit TV show, Stargate SG-1. Based on the script of the pilot episode, Rising is a must-read for all fans and includes deleted scenes and dialog not seen on TV.

RISING

Weir stepped forward, and Daniel could see something burning bright in her eyes; he knew it was mirrored in his own. Excitement, the thrill of opening Pandora’s box. “What are you saying, Dr. Jackson?”

He paused, just for an instant, just to relish the moment. “It’s an eight-symbol address,” he began. “What we’ve been looking for may be farther away than we ever imagined…” Weir was holding her breath, tense with expectation. Daniel smiled, “But not out of our reach.”

Even McKay seemed reluctantly impressed. “Atlantis?”

“Atlantis.” Daniel studied them both, making sure they comprehended the significance of what he was about to say. “And I think we can go there.”

The silence that followed told him they understood. Humanity was poised to take its first steps into a new galaxy, and they – these people standing before him – were destined to be in the vanguard of the most important voyage of discovery mankind had ever undertaken.

He envied them more than he could say.

Stargate: Atlantis RISING is a fairly straight-forward prose adaptation of the SG:A two-parter of the same name. It fleshes out a handful of scenes from the episodes, gives some insight into some characters' heads (Sumner and Ford, stand out for me), and generally doesn't contradict much from the screen version (aside from the spelling of "Ethosians").

Malcolm serves the story well and adds what she can, but is mostly hand-cuffed to the script. The prose version offers different perspectives, though, and that leads to different responses in the audience. For instance, I still hate the Sumner character, but for different reasons than why I hated him on TV. Ford and Sheppard are much more sympathetic characters in this novelization. Malcolm goes into detail as the characters are saying goodbye before setting off for Atlantis in the book and I much prefer her version of these scenes, which amounted to just a dialogue-free montage on-screen. There's a portion about Weir getting a necklace from her beau that I wished had been televised. It's become my head-canon, for what that's worth.

All in all, RISING is a solid novelization of the first two SG:A episodes.

STARGATE ATLANTIS Rising eBook Sally Malcolm Reviews

Let me tell you, this book A-awesome! Sally Malcolm really understands the characters, and their inner monologues and thoughts are quite revealing and hilarious at the same time too. She nailed Jack O'Neill and John Sheppard perfectly. Their wry humor, the laid back attitude... Her McKay is convinced that the universe is out to get him, that for some reason, fate hates him personally. Teyla is a wise, thoughtful leader. And even Weir and Ford are likable! My favorite part of the book/episode is the beginning that takes place in Antarctica, when we get to see the characters for the first time and the threat of the Wraith is still far, far away. If I didn't find it silly, I would talk about the book in capslocks, I love it so much!
Thank you Sally Malcolm for a great introduction to the series of Stargate Atlantis in a book form. I love it!
I love the series and the books are just as good. They keep the story alive and active. I have in paperback and in kindle - don't want to wear it out.
I just loved and would recommend the full book doesn't get any matter by its own matter again stands up by their own book seriez
this book is one of the best. also, the stargate atlantis books were written in between the episodes so you get to follow the team. i hope the authors write more stargate atlantis books. i am reading Exogenesis, i've read all the books and the legacy books. i don't know what i'm going to do when i finish my last book.
I got a more in depth look at what the characters were thinking and feeling. I really loved the writing style. The book is I think the first 3 episodes of the show. Can't wait to dive into the next book!
Of the onscreen episodes. It’s workable, but if you’ve seen the episodes, you have pretty much everything you’re going to get from this novel. There are a very few character insights, but nothing you might not guess from the actors’ portrayals. It’s okay, but with a limited budget, you might consider later novels and stories in the series.
